Swan Trophy

Penicuik lost the opening tie in this double rink knockout competition to Athelstaneford. Dave Anderson’s rink of Jim Ramsay, Jean Lennie, and Jim Cowper lost by one shot, and Ken Hunter’s rink of Dave Carr, Keith Morris, and Tom Alexander peeled.

Knock-out Competition

Team Lambie and Team Ramsay beat their opponents in the semi-final games to contest the final. The final was reported to be a relatively close game with one high scoring end ultimately giving Team Lambie victory. Congratulations to Andrew, David Ballantyne, Iain Scott, and Ian Neil.

First Points Competition

The medal was won by Keith Morris.

Away Day

The Away Day at Braehead was enjoyed by a small but merry group of curlers. The games proved to be very close with Walter’s team of Iain Scott and Elaine Lambie playing very well to win the competition. The “booby” prize was won by Reg’s team of John Jacobs, Alex Moir and Vic Ramage.

The generous prizes were donated by Dave and Liz Anderson. The staff at Braehead gave us a warm welcome and after “one or two drinks” following the competition we returned from Braehead to the Navaar. We were joined by a number of partners and had a very enjoyable evening.

Singles Competition

After the early exits, Walter Brown played Ken Hunter in the first semi-final in a tight game which ended up all square, and which was decided on ‘drawing the house’. Walter played to the back of the four foot but Ken followed up with a shot to the four foot to take the tie. In the second semi-final Andrew Lambie beat Jim Ramsay. Andrew, who had played well weighted shots throughout the evening, went on to win the medal decisively.

Hamish Tait Trophy

Penicuik won this four-cornered bonspiel competition for the second season in a row. Walter Brown with Ken Hunter, Jean Lennie, and Linda McKay ended on +7, and Dave Anderson, Jim Ramsay, Jim Cowper, and Tom Alexander ended on +5, to give Penicuik an aggregate score of +12. The highest individual scoring rink on the night was Keith Anderson’s Merchiston rink on +8. Players from Penicuik, Chartered Surveyors, Merchiston, and Watsonian Club enjoyed supper together in the Murrayfield Dining Room afterwards.

District Medal

Penicuik played two rinks from Kelso CC for a Royal Club medal in Early December. The President’s rink contested a tight game against their opponents and ended up with a peel, but the Vice-presidents rink lost by 8 shots to 3 to Jimmy Green’s strong rink, so Kelso gained the medal. It was a friendly occasion with a number of the Kelso players well know through their participation in the Gathering for many years as ‘Kelso Reivers’

Team Points

Disappointingly only 6 players elected to play in this season’s Team Points, but despite that those who did play enjoyed a great evening of excellent competition. The final outcome of the evening with all disciplines being played was that the team of Iain Scott, John Jacobs and Dave Anderson beat Alex Moir, Murray Hope and Keith Morris by 90 points to 82, with the top scorers being Dave Anderson (42), John Jacobs (32) and Murray Hope (30). Well done to all who turned up including Walter who kept us right but regrettably was unable play because his hip was too painful
