Kicking off 26/27 Season

Penicuik Curling Club – Opening Bonspiel Report Sunday 4th October 2026

The Penicuik Curling Club kicked off the 2026–27 season in fine style with our Opening Bonspiel on Sunday afternoon. A fantastic 27 curlers signed up, filling the ice with energy, quick sweeping, and plenty of good‑natured banter.

We began with a lively session of quick curling to blow away the summer cobwebs, followed by five ends of traditional curling to ease everyone back into familiar rhythm. With six skips guiding their teams—and three teams of five rotating through play—the ice was busy, noisy, and full of enthusiasm.

As ever, the confectionary supplies took a beating, fuelling both laughter and the occasional despairing cry as stones drifted just a touch too far or not quite far enough. The competition ran smoothly until a moment of drama when Nigel Henderson took a wee slip, landing squarely on his behind. Thankfully, only his pride suffered any lasting damage.

Competition Results A tightly contested finish saw victory decided by just one end. Congratulations to our winning team, David Gillespie, Liz Anderson, Saho Arakawa & Jean Cassie

Thanks also to everyone who played in teams Black, Cassie, McWilliam & Blackwood, each contributing to a spirited and enjoyable afternoon on the ice.

Our prestigious Little Mermaid Trophy (for the gallant last‑placed team) was awarded to: Jim Hume, Dave Anderson, Pam Ramsay, Roger Scott & Louise Clapperton

Post‑Match Social We rounded off the day in the clubhouse with a lovely dinner, followed by traybakes, cake, and coffee.

Club President Margaret Carr presented the trophies and medals, including a particularly special moment when Jeanette Lambie received her 50‑year medal from the RCCC, recognising her remarkable contribution to curling. A heartfelt congratulations to Jeanette on this milestone achievement.

It was a delightful Sunday afternoon filled with friendship, fun, and the unmistakable buzz of a new curling season beginning. We look forward to seeing everyone back on the ice in the weeks ahead.
