Annual Golf Event 2022

This year’s Florida Scramble took place on Sunday 11th September at Glencorse Golf Club, where despite recent downpours the course was in excellent condition. Only 3 teams took part this year but, with the forecast fair, everyone set off in good spirits after the customary photo shoot. There may not have been much to see in the way of the usual Glencorse wildlife of deer and chicken, but there were more than a few wild shots as play progressed.

Only one golfer, Dave A. managed to hit the green at the 8th Hole to win the first challenge of ‘Nearest the Pin’. Then, although he gave it his best shot, Reg was out-driven by Roger to win the ‘Longest Drive’ at the 16th hole, with Jenny winning the ‘Longest Lady’s Drive’. Unfortunately, by late afternoon the rain was on, and a few errant shots by the last team going up the 16th resulted in Dave C. having to run for cover when an errant approach shot hit the wrong fairway. And so it was that a rather bedraggled group finally holed out on the 18th green, before all retired to the Club Room to join the dinner guests.

Craig had found an unusual ‘Golfer’s Grace’, which he recited, before everyone tucked in to an excellent dinner provided by the Club House staff. This was rounded off by the presentation of prizes and surprisingly the competition had been very tight overall, with only 1 or 2 shots separating the winners from the also rans.

In third place, the team of Reg Dunbar, Stuart Blackwood and Jenny Wray. In second place, the team of Dave Carr, Roger Scott and Liz Anderson. To at least one player’s astonishment, the winning team was announced as Dave Anderson, Craig Brown, Paul Clapperton and Jean Noble.

Craig’ s wife Adele won the guest Raffle for a bottle of wine donated by Geoff Dawe.

Craig finished off the evening by proposing a vote of thanks to Dave Carr for his help organising the event, to the Club House staff and greensmen, as well as Roger and Jean who had donated the golf prizes. Once again, it had turned out to be a very enjoyable afternoon.

Annual Golf Event 2021

Following on from the success of the Croquet Outing, interest was high among members, friends and family to meet up again as soon as possible. As a consequence, the largest ever group of entrants for the Club Golf Outing gathered at Glencorse Golf Club on Sunday 19th September to do battle. Twenty-two players, including five ladies, were divided into six teams of three, and one team of four, to play out a version of a Florida Scramble. This led to initial confusion and lengthy, not entirely clear explanations, but added to the fun.

The weather stayed dry and warm throughout the afternoon, and following a great day’s golf in beautiful surroundings, the golfers met up with another eleven friends and partners in the newly-refurbished clubhouse for refreshments, dinner and presentation of prizes. Fortunately for president Iain, he was drawn to play with two cracking guest golfers, Alister Lambie and Stuart Rose, and he followed up his success at the croquet with another win. But it was close! Team Dunbar, with Anne Lambie and Stuart Blackwood, tied overall but lost out with a poorer back nine. Team Carr, with Liz Anderson and Colin McCall, were sent out to the practice ground following their awards as “the sh****st” golfers! The winning team left with all the prizes; Alister Lambie being closest to the pin at the 8th, and president Iain having the longest drive at the 16th.

Following on from the presentation of golf prizes, President Iain invited Margaret Cowper to come forward and receive her medal to celebrate 50 years as a member of Penicuik Curling Club. Margaret’s surprise and pleasure at receiving this award was matched by the warmth of the reception given to her by the club members.

Billy McMillan and his Glencorse team served up an excellent meal to complete a truly wonderful day, and everyone left home buzzing with the prospect of the forthcoming curling season.

Our thanks once again to everyone at Glencorse Golf Club for the quality of the surroundings, the golf course and the meal, and their friendly co-operation and assistance. Our thanks also to Roger and Jean for sponsoring this event.
